The Opportunity

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Principal Urban Drainage Modeller to join our growing wastewater modelling team in Newcastle, based in our Quayside office. This is an exciting opportunity to work on major UK and Ireland programmes at the forefront of AMP delivery, helping shape how the industry responds to challenges in water quality, urban flooding and environmental performance.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Principal Urban Drainage Modeller, you will lead the delivery of complex urban drainage and wastewater modelling projects, providing technical direction and ensuring high standards of quality and consistency across all outputs.

You will:

  • Lead and oversee the delivery of urban drainage and wastewater modelling projects across major UK frameworks.
  • Develop and apply advanced hydraulic models to assess flood risk, optimise drainage systems and support sustainable development.
  • Provide technical governance, review and sign-off of modelling outputs.
  • Support project planning, coordination and delivery across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Lead and mentor engineers and modellers, supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Contribute to client engagement, technical discussions and long-term solution development.

Your work will directly influence how water companies across the UK respond to climate change, population growth and tightening environmental standards. By delivering robust modelling solutions, you will help reduce flood risk, improve water quality and support more resilient urban environments.

You will also play a key role in strengthening technical capability within the Newcastle team, supporting the development of future leaders and embedding best practice across projects. Your contribution will help accelerate the use of digital tools and innovative modelling approaches, reinforcing Stantec’s position as a leader in wastewater modelling and environmental solutions.

ABOUT YOU

Essential

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Geography or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in urban drainage or wastewater modelling.
  • Strong technical expertise in InfoWorks ICM or equivalent hydraulic modelling software.
  • Proven experience leading projects and providing technical direction.
  • Experience managing, mentoring and developing technical teams.
  • Strong communication, report writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience working on regulated water industry projects or frameworks.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE or CIWEM).

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership.
  • Experience with digital modelling tools, automation or data-driven solutions.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary or multi-office teams.
