The Opportunity

Groundwater permitting and hydrogeology in the quarrying and mining sector sits at the intersection of technical complexity, regulatory scrutiny and commercial reality. The professionals who can navigate all three with confidence, building trusted client relationships while leading technically rigorous work, are genuinely hard to find.

At Stantec, our Energy and Resources Group is expanding its groundwater permitting and quarrying hydrogeology services, and we are seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Hydrogeologist to help lead this growth. If you bring the experience, the judgment, and the client-facing confidence to make a real difference in this space, we would very much like to talk.

About The Role

Based in Reading, Birmingham or Shrewsbury, you will take a senior technical and client-facing role within a collaborative, ambitious team delivering hydrogeological services across major energy, infrastructure and regulated-sector projects.

Your technical work will span complex hydrogeological assessments, conceptual and numerical groundwater modelling, aquifer test design and interpretation, groundwater monitoring programme management and the preparation and review of high-quality technical deliverables. You will lead groundwater abstraction and discharge permitting work from strategy through to regulator engagement, and communicate findings clearly and confidently to clients, regulators and project stakeholders.

Beyond the technical, you will maintain and develop strong client relationships, identify opportunities to provide additional support, contribute to proposals and bids, and help shape the direction of our quarrying and mining hydrogeology service area. You will also mentor and develop junior and mid-level colleagues, supporting the continued growth of a team with real ambition.

A full clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel to UK offices and project sites are required and your groundwater modelling experience will include packages such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW, Visual MODFLOW, Groundwater Vistas or equivalent.

Your Impact

The hydrogeological leadership you provide here will shape how some of the UK's most complex quarrying, mining and permitting projects understand and manage their groundwater risks. Your assessments, models and regulatory submissions will help clients make better decisions, achieve permits with confidence and deliver projects that take their environmental obligations seriously.

As a senior figure in the team, the colleagues you develop and the client relationships you build will contribute to the long-term growth and reputation of a service area that is genuinely on an upward trajectory.

About You

You hold a degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Water Resources or a related discipline, with a relevant MSc or PhD, a valuable addition. You bring significant experience in hydrogeology, groundwater assessment, water resources, quarrying, mining, environmental permitting or environmental consultancy.

You combine strong technical judgement with the communication skills and commercial awareness to lead client relationships and contribute meaningfully to business development. You are experienced in leading groundwater permitting work, directing robust modelling approaches, reviewing complex datasets and preparing technical deliverables to a high standard. You mentor others with genuine investment in their development, and you are looking for a role where your seniority is matched by the scope and influence on offer.
