Have you ever thought about joining a multidisciplinary team where you can work in a diverse, welcoming, and fun environment on amazing projects, while making a real difference in people’s lives? Then look no further than Stantec, where we work with clients, regulators, and stakeholders to develop effective and sustainable solutions driven by the environmental needs of our natural inland catchments. If this opportunity sounds appealing to you, we have an exciting position available for a Senior Environmental Water Quality Consultant to join our team, ideally based in one of our Midlands offices. However, other locations will also be considered.
You will support growth in Stantec’s dedicated Water Environment Team, working on the continuous development of our expertise in all aspects of water quality and integrated catchment management to develop sustainable water, land, and asset management solutions that meet the aspirations of the Government’s 25-year environment plan. Much of our work involves understanding the linkages and dependencies in catchment systems to meet future water management demands, from both a water supply and wastewater treatment perspective and with growing public awareness of environmental challenges, including climate change and pollution. Making the best use of available evidence, we identify risks and/or quantify their impacts on the water environment, and recommend how to mitigate these through improved catchment management and nature-based solutions, as an alternative to or in support of more traditional engineered solutions.
You will work on a portfolio of projects across the Water sector for a range of clients, with the opportunity to also work on Energy and Community Development projects. The projects will require you to collaborate with other experts (e.g., water and wastewater treatment, urban drainage, urban development, sustainability, and environmental economics) and, through working closely with our clients, integrate asset, land, and water management to deliver benefits for the environment and society.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and imaginative scientist to join an ambitious team in a role that offers ample scope for technical development and career progression. The role is client-facing with an expectation that you will have and continue to develop strong collaborative relationships with clients, regulators and stakeholders. You will prepare technical proposals and reports, and supervise colleagues, including reviewing and checking outputs, and evaluating progress against time and budget constraints. You will provide mentorship to junior staff and strengthen relationships with other disciplines within Stantec.
Stantec has major contracts throughout the UK and Ireland that require the expertise mentioned above. Whilst we are very successful in our markets, we are looking to the future, where the latest guidance and regulation put far greater emphasis on multi-stakeholder sustainable solutions. This role is about being part of our journey, where we have already seen substantial growth in our services and are confident this will continue for the foreseeable future.
About you
You will hold a relevant Degree qualification and, desirably, a post-graduate qualification with a background in one or more of water quality, catchment science, hydrogeology, pollution management or limnology. You will possess a good understanding of relevant legislation and guidance related to the water environment, as well as experience in delivering evidence-led investigations.
Proven experience in providing consulting services in one or more of our target sectors, along with expertise in the development of nature-based solutions such as wetlands, natural flood management, or soil management, will also be advantageous.
We are advertising for several roles and would be particularly interested in candidates with demonstrable experience in either or both of the following:
- Design, coordination and delivery of monitoring programmes with knowledge in novel / emerging monitoring and remote sensing techniques.
- Advanced skills in data analysis (including GIS), coding and modelling environmental data.
Key accountabilities include:
- Continuous development of our services to establish and maintain a market-leading position.
- Provide technical management and specialist input to catchment investigations and nature-based solutions for both small-scale and large, multiple-discipline infrastructure projects.
- Author and reviewer of technical evidence-led reports, including compliance with our quality assurance processes
- Coordinate and oversee in-house and subcontracted field teams.
- Build client relationships and develop new business opportunities across the UK and overseas.
- Mentoring of junior staff and strengthening relationships with other disciplines
We are proud of our culture. We have an open, friendly, and professional environment where ideas are shared and opportunities are seized.
