Groundwater is at the heart of some of the most technically demanding environmental challenges in the minerals and resources sector. Understanding how aquifers behave, how abstraction and dewatering affect the wider water environment, and how to navigate the regulatory frameworks that govern them all requires a rare blend of technical depth and practical consultancy experience.
At Stantec, our Energy and Resources Group brings exactly that blend to a growing portfolio of hydrogeological projects, and we are looking for a Senior Hydrogeologist to join us. If you have spent five to ten years building real expertise in hydrogeology and you are ready for a role where that expertise is both valued and stretched, this could be the right move.
About The Role
Based in Reading, Birmingham or Shrewsbury, you will join a strong, collaborative team delivering high-quality hydrogeological services primarily across the minerals and resources sector, with opportunities to support projects across water, energy, infrastructure, community development and transportation too.
Your work will span the full range of hydrogeological consultancy: groundwater investigations, aquifer testing, groundwater monitoring, hydrogeological impact and risk assessment, conceptual model development, numerical groundwater modelling, abstraction licensing and discharge permitting. You will work holistically alongside hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental assessment and ground engineering colleagues, contributing your expertise to technically robust, value-driven project delivery.
As a senior team member, you will also support junior colleagues in their development and contribute to business development activity as the team continues to grow. A willingness to travel to UK offices and project sites, and a full clean UK driving licence are required.
Your Impact
The hydrogeological assessments and conceptual models you develop will directly inform how minerals and resources projects understand and manage their groundwater risks. Your work will help clients navigate complex permitting processes with confidence, engage constructively with regulators and deliver projects that take their environmental responsibilities seriously.
The support you provide to junior colleagues will shape how the next generation of hydrogeologists in the team develops, passing on the practical judgement and technical rigour that only comes with genuine experience in the field.
About You
You hold a degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Water Resources or a related discipline, with a relevant MSc or PhD, a welcome bonus though not essential. You bring many years of relevant experience, ideally within a consulting environment, with a strong grounding in groundwater studies applied to environmental impact assessments, quarrying, dewatering, water resources, abstraction and discharge, environmental permitting and regulatory engagement.
You are confident in developing robust hydrogeological conceptual models, interpreting aquifer and monitoring data and preparing clear technical reports for clients, regulators and project stakeholders. Experience supporting groundwater abstraction and discharge permitting, including preparing hydrogeological assessments and technical documentation, is important for this role. Experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments would be a valuable addition, though the primary focus here is hydrogeological.
You communicate clearly and confidently with a wide range of audiences, work well within multidisciplinary teams and bring the sound judgement that complex, high-stakes hydrogeological work demands.
